SP2 and DAO

Really do need some help in fixing this problem since installing sp2.

I'm still using office 2000. XP pro copyright claims to be 2000.

At first it was just when attempting to export some info from access to a plain
vanilla text file. It wanted to find something related to dao in some
nonexistent temp directory. after about 3 or 4 cancels where it asked to
install it [dao] it went ahead and did exactly what I wanted it to do [export
the data to a text file].

The other day I attempted to open a DOC file with WORD. word also wanted to
access dao and it also went thru the same time consuming requests for me to
point it to dao. After telling it to cancel several times it went and did
exactly fine with opening the doc file.

I've searched the web, and M$ for something about DAO, and pretty much just run
up against others with this same problem searching for DAO help and finding
nothing on how to fix the problem.

Some background; what I did find about DAO isn't very encouraging. It doesn't
exist in any CAB file, it also doesn't exist on the XP install disk, SP2
install disk, office2k install disk, or the ATI install disk.

I did find DAO.DLL, but that's not what o2k wants. it wants DAO.MSI.
It attempts to configure DAO then asks for the MSI that doesn't exist.
I can only assume it has something to do with SP2. As this problem and several
others didn't exist until I installed SP2.

The only DAO that I know of is a method of burning information to a CDr. In
this case it means "Disk At Once."

Which is it? Office 2000 or Office XP? There could be significant
differences in what you download and how you perform your queries.

out in the crowd --- it is none of those.

Did you post in any one of the DAO dedicated newsgroups on this MS news
server? For example, the microsoft.public.access.modulesdaovba one?

Did you search the MS downloads site? Get lots of hits there, especially
for the latest service pack/update for Office 2000 on their website:

copyright. Which means since they came from the same company, with the same
year, they should at least be compatible. The SP2 I imagine has a 2k4 copyright
since it just came out.

exists. the dao.msi as with the majority of MSI's also has other stuff besides
1 simple data file. But the MSI isn't required to install every program that
uses just one or two files from the dao.msi . including the dao.dll in an
install will serve the same purpose as including the msi, but normally cut 90%
of the file size down.
Firing up O2k now it asks for dao.msi.

Well if it exists, there shouldn't be any problem finding it on the web. or at
least at M$.
It can't be found.
Heck I [and everyone else with this dao problem] could probably fix it if the
dao.msi were available in any of the programs I mentioned requiring the use of
it.
When the programs ask for where to find it, it could be stuck right there in
the office directory.

Then I suggest you look at your CD/DVD burning software for the DAO.MSI
file. See below.

Your original post was not clear. And since Windows XP has a copyright date
of 28 August 2002 (not 2000) it seemed likely you were still talking about
an Office 2000 situation.

Fact. Many very knowledgable and helpful people (and not just the MVP's) in
the various MS peer-to-peer newsgroups will refuse to respond when the user
insists on including the childish "M$" reference in their posts. And you can
generally forget about any MS employee jumping in with an answer. It is
certainly your choice to use that silly thing, but wanted you to be aware of
the consequences.

Are you quite sure it wasn't originally asking for DATA1.MSI in those
prompts? Regardless, using Google to search for "DAO.MSI" shows the
majority of cases related to DAO.MSI were for the "disk at once" files
needed for some CD burning software. Not at all the same as the Data Access
Object you are looking for to use MS Access data.

Quite obviously the two definitions for DAO are worlds apart. AFAIK there
is no DAO.MSI related to MS Access --- altho I did not go all the way back
to Access versions 1.0 and 2.0 to verify that.

If you had posted into the newsgroup I mentioned above this would have been
clarified for you long ago. Looks to me like you would rather gripe than
actually fix the problem.

If you had taken time to fully read and digest those links I posted, you
would have seen that you needed dao350.dll and/or dao360.dll to perform the
Office2000 Access ---> Word transfers you mentioned originally. And that
the DAO.MSI your system keeps asking for is most likely related to your
CD-ROM burning software.

You would also have learned that MS doesn't do a lot of support for DAO
these days; and that there are newer/better/easier methods for you to get
your Access data into Word or text files.

But I don't think you want to learn any of that. I'm just a guy trying to
help you solve your problem as you posted it; but instead of working on the
problem resolution you seem more intent on slamming MS. So be it. I won't
bother you again with further responses.

Unlikely, since it most probably is not an Office issue at all. See my

I'm almost positive that the problem has something to do with ATI installing
dao3.5. and something else [probably office 2k] installing dao3.6. and I've
created office things with dao 3.6, and they're now accessing dao 3.5.

If that's true I could most likely just remove dao 3.5 from the add/remove
section. But I hate messing with the AIW configuration once it's run for more
than 24 hours without a major crash. and this time it's been nearly a month
between major instability.

DAO = DATA ACCESS OBJECTS

It is used to connect to databases (Access, SQL, Oracle and others)
Microsoft do use it alot even thou ADO is a newer and ADO.net is even
newer.
ADO = ActiveX Data Object

DAO dll file is available in MDAC downloadable from Microsoft
MDAC
2.8 is the current version

I dont know about DAO.msi... but it’s worth a try

MDAC = Microsoft Data Access Components

I’m not sure what version you have installed but it is possible that a
newer MDAC ie 2.8 has overwritten on deleted some files required in
Office 2k (or is it XP).

My advise would be to re-install MDAC 2.8... and if that does fix your
problem try and earlier version maybe 2.5 or 2.6....

The other stuff i read suggests also that you goto Control Panel-->Add
or Remove Programs--> and remove DAO (ATI ver. 3.5)

It sound like DLL Hell in XP
