We know that the XP CD is bootable and I can backup a copy with no
problem BUT, if I want to put sp1a also on the same cd - How to do
that please.

The reason is that the XP itself is incomplete as always and the sp1a
is needed everytime a new fresh install of XP, since there is a lots
space left in the XP bootable cd, so why not put the serivce pack (and
patch/updates) in the same cd, that way everything is more handy and
practical though.

I suggest creating a version of the XP CD with SP1 "slipstreamed" onto it:

http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?object=article.cfm&id=160

"Creating a bootable Windows XP SP1 CD (Nero)"

(There are instructions there as well for Roxio's Easy CD Creator.)

It ought to be possible to slipstream the additional hotfixes as well, but I
haven't tried it.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;814847

"How to Slipstream Hotfixes That Replace Pre-Existing Driver Files"

(This is intended for installation from a hard drive, but I presume that it
could be extended to files to be burned to CD.)

HTH.
