I just bought a new computer with Windows XP. I also downloaded all the Windows Updates. When I went to an MS Word site to download something, it said I must first download SP1 first. How can I tell whether my computer already has SP1? What happens if you download SP1 a second time by mistake. I know it's a big download. Thanks

Go to Start > run > type in "winver" to see whether you have SP1 already.
Start internet explorer, go to Tools > Windows Updates > scan for updates
This will tell you whether you need to install SP1a or other updates.
Remember to install all critical ones.

the service pack that you are talking about is office
service pack.

There is currently 2 office service packs available, 1 and
2 for office xp (2002).

I would highly recommend downloading the sp1 and sp2 for
Microsoft Office and installing them if you have Office XP.

Go here and have it scan your computer. It tells you what you need, just
like windows update except its for office.
