SP1 Setup Error

I'm unable to execute WinXP SP1 on my son's Dell laptop. I get the "Setup Error - Setup Cancelled" messages. The fix described in KB329261 doesn't solve this problem. It occurs for both SP1-on-CD and "express" download install attempts. Anti-virus, etc. was disabled prior to the install attempt. The log file contains only the following message:

***
InstallFromFunction call in inf section "BuildType.DirId" failed.
***
Service Pack 1 Setup canceled.
***

Anyone have a clue as to what's going on and how to fix?

Did he ever have the program installed mentioned in the article? If this is
the case, restore the default settings, which disables XP-AntiSpy.

XP-AntiSpy is a freeware program that can disable features in Windows XP,
including the Automatic Updates feature. If you use the XP-AntiSpy program
to disable Windows XP features, you may not be able to install Windows XP
SP1.

Good luck!

No evidence of XP-AntiSpy in the "Add/Remove" list, file search turns up nothing. Can't be absolutely sure that it wasn't there sometime in the past.
