Hi, my computer crashed a few weeks ago and i took it to
Best Buy to get it fixed. When I got it back, Windows XP
no longer had all the updates I installed before. Now
when I try to install SP1, an error message comes up
saying I have an invalid product key. I originally
bought the computer a year ago from one of my frat
brothers, and i dont have the XP cd. Is there anything I
can do, or am I out of luck?

Thanks

what did Best Buy do to fix it?
Interesting scenario if they loaded windows on it . Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Greetings --

If you had all of the current updates on the PC _before_ it went
into Best Buy for repair, I'd have to conclude that Best Buy
reinstalled the OS using a pirated copy of WinXP. I'd strongly
suggest that you take the PC back to Best Buy and insist that they
make it right. You might want to take along a local police officer to
reinforce your position.

If you are trying to install Service Pack 1a and getting the
following:

The Product Key Used to Install Windows Is Invalid

You need to purchase and use a _legitimate_ full retail copy of
WinXP Pro to perform a repair (a.k.a. in-place upgrade) installation,
using the new CD and Product Key.

Remember, you should also report whomever sold you the pirated
software to the pertinent law enforcement agencies; you've been
defrauded.
