SP1 Installation error on XP Pro

When I try to install SP1 an error message comes up saying that it cannot
complete installation because the file:
"d:\windows\system32\drivers\atapi.sys" is in open or in use by another
application. Yet closing all the open applications doesn't resolve it. Anyone
know what might be using this resource/ how to get around this problem?

You should download and install SP2 in lieu of SP1:

"Copy Error: Setup cannot copy the file Atapi.sys" error message when you try
to install Windows XP Service Pack 2
