Hi,
I'm trying to help someone update their computer that is on a dial up and
upon checking "Windows Update" they have 24 critical updates to install.
That would take hours and hours on a dial up. Could someone direct me to a
windows site that has the availability to download at least just the service
pack 1 to disk so I can take it to his computer and install from CD?
Your help is greatly appreciated.
TIA
Peggy

Hi Peggy,

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads is a place where you can manually
download service packs. For example, leave the drop down to all and type in
windows xp sp1. You would want the Windows XP SP1a (32-bit) for IT
professionals.

Here is the direct link:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...79-fa3a-48bf-ade5-023443e29d78&DisplayLang=en

Another great place that you can perform manual downloads (and not install)
is the Windows Update site. For example, lets say you wanted to get the
RPC/DCOM fix that corrects a flaw that the blaster and welchia took
advantage of. Go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com you need to select
the link on the left to personalize windows update. Check the box next to
display link to windows update catalog and select save settings. Now select
the Windows Update Catalog link on the left. Select link to find updates
for Microsoft Windows operating systems. Pick the operating system and
language. Select Advance double arrow. Uncheck all boxes except the
critical updates and services packs. Select Search. After a few moments
you will see a list of items you can selectively download to your drive for
burning to CD.

EXCELLENT!
Thank you so much!
Peggy

Hi Neo !

Thanks for the great tip on downloading the hot fixes manually !! We have
over 80 XP machines at work and updating them has always been a hassle (use
Novell servers). You just saved me hours of work !!

Thanks tons
Grant

Is it possible to order a CD from Microsoft?

This would be useful for the reasons you state - I'm in the same position
as you, and doubtless many others.

That too Peter...I was just hoping for a quicker fix. Neo's excellent post
is what I really needed. I wish Microsoft would make it a little easier on
us that are not IT professional but still have a need to download to disk
and not have to hunt all around for it. Just a thought!
