SP1 causes constant check disk

I just loaded a copy of xp pro on a machine, that had
xp pro on it but I formatted so the partition was clean.
All went well, then I downloaded SP1. After SP1 was
installed the computer keeps cycling through checkdisk.
The error is window\system32\config\system.log entry is
not valid file and folder verification is complete then
convert lost chains to files Yes
24kb in 3 recovered files.Windows has made corrections to
the file system.
That just keeps repeating, so OK, I tried it with XP
home (BTW both pro and home are legal registered copies).
Downloading SP1 goes fine but when it reboots I get the
endless check disk loop.
Any idea what this could be. It does not do it prior
to running SP1, there is no anti-virus running and Windows
firewall is activated.
