I just tried to d/l and install XP SP2 from Windows Update. It seemed fine
until the "Finishing - cleaning up files" stage, when it failed. I found
reference to an 0xd0000005 error, but couldn't find anything that made sense
regarding this.

The computer started fine, and I have the Windows Security Center - seems
fine. What should I do to get rid of the "failed" status?

Thanks in advance.

Download and install the "IT Version" of Service Pack 2. You *do not* have
to be an IT Professional nor do you have to be installing on more than one
machine in order to utilize this resource.

Direct Download of Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Windows XP

Order Windows XP Service Pack 2 on CD

Sorry, but it appears as if SP2 has in fact installed ok, except for the
cleanup phase. If I look at "About" windows, I see: (Build
2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519: Service Pack 2). Do I really need to
reinstall it again?

If I do, should I remove it from the PC via Control Panel first?

IMO, you should and you don't need to uninstall it first.
