SP 1a and USB 2.0

SP 1 hopelessly crashes my XP Home system. I have to
format the drive since it won't reboot after installing
SP 1a. As a result I'm unable to get a driver for the USB
2.0 controller and for the moment have only USB 1.1. Is
there a way to have USB 2.0 without installing SP 1.
Thanks

If "SP 1 hopelessly crashes your XP Home system", your system
files are probably corrupt to begin with. Perform a "Repair Install",
the download SP1a. Without the Service Pack installed, there is
no USB 2.0 support.

Visit http://www.microsoft.com/WindowsXP/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/default.asp
and select "Network Installation", download SP1a to a new folder, then install.

When you end up doing the format, install Win2K.

My apology Carey, I didn't scroll all the way down on your post and missed
your link to network install.

In addition to Carey's excellent advice, you might want to download and
install the "Network Install" of SP1a. It is available from the following
web-site.

Try the USB 2 driver update at
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;822603
(there is a download link on the page). It is intended for SP1, so it
may refuse to install if you do not have SP1; but there is no harm in
trying. Make sure you have a restore point to go back to if it gives
trouble
