SP 1 Installation -- T O T A L D I S A S T E R

Being very smug since all previous Vista Ultimate updates have installed
flawlessly (except for the Windows Live Toolbar security update that repeatedly
refuses to install), I downloaded and attempted to install the stand alone SP1
pack (since it was not offered on Windows update at around 5pm EST).

I had read the installation problem Microsoft web page that was provided by a
poster in the general newsgroup this morning, and since none of the hardware
that could cause problems with the installation were on my system, I was
confident that I would have no problems.

The installation seemed to go fine. There was one reboot, and during the next
phase after a rather lengthy time, the screen said that the installation had
failed and any changes were being rolled back.

Upon reboot, a message came up that said ntldr.exe could not be found and to
insert the installation DVD and do a start up repair.

The start up repair from the DVD took about a half an hour, and finally came up
with the message that it could not repair the system

I booted up again, and chose a normal boot up. Vista DID boot normally.

I checked Problem Reports and Solutions and there were 785 problems

There were 6 problems.that cannot be deleted, all which were related to the HP
PhotoSmart inf files.

I uninstalled the PhotoSmart printer, .attempted the SP1 install again. But
sadly with the same failure, 453 errors in Problem Reports and Solutions and
and the same 6 problems that cannot be deleted.

Cal Bear,

Have you tried this? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821

I read about it in one of Mr. Frisch's threads. I don't know if it will
help you.

a shot in the dark, but did you disable antivirus and antispyware software
during the update?

Actually, it is much better to use Windows Update to install SP1.

1) Windows Update will scan and offer any updated drivers that are
recommended prior to installing the SP. It is safer/better for most people
to use Windows Update.

2) The update is typically 65MB or a little bit more, whereas the full
download link is much larger (434 MB). Windows Update downloads a special
compressed format, but it builds up a FULL copy on your hard disk just
exactly like the standalone download before beginning the install process.
So in effect, the actual SP install works the same.

Windows Update.

Thanks,

Yes I did try that. Trying to run it, it said "Does Not Apply to Your System".

(Ultimate x86)

Thank you again.

Actually the 434 MB download went amazingly fast -- about 10 min. or so.

My system seems to be working just fine, although I have not yet run all my
programs or used all the OS's features (DVD burning, etc.).

Any idea how I can remove the 6 problems from Problem Reports and Solutions that
I am not allowed to delete. They all pertain to the HP PhotoSmart printer which
I have uninstalled and not yet reinstalled (in truth HP provided a newer driver
last week, from ver. 9 to ver. 10). I know this is just cosmetic, but I would
like to remove them.

Thank you for your response.

Go here, download the full standalone install;

Boot into Safe Mode (F8) and start the install from there.

I've used this method on three different Vista machines,
two desktops and one laptop..... it has worked flawlessly.

I had not trouble with the full x86 disk on either my desktop or my laptop.
However, I was surprised that it took more time to first uninstall RC1 then
to install the RTM release itself. I din not use SafeMode, I did however,
disconnect from the network during both the uninstall and the install.

Anyone attempting to install SP1 needs to at least disable
any type of security software, and be patient.... the install
may take over an hour.

I have always installed the standalone Service Packs for the OS
and Office while in Safe Mode.

I don't make it operable, it just is. Your DVD/CD drive
should be working in Safe Mode, too.

You don't need the DVD or CD drive to install SP1.
Well, unless you copied the SP1 install to a disc and
are installing it on several computers. If your drive
isn't working in Safe Mode, just copy SP1 off the disc
to the hard drive after booting up normally. Then go
back to Safe Mode and run the install from the hard drive.
