SP-1 Download Process Question

I have dial-up service, which is randomly interrupted about
once a week. My SP-1 download is estimated at 20+ hours.
What happens 5, 10, or 15 hours into that download if my
dial-up connection is broken? Does the download process
have a mechanism so than when reconnected, and the download
is initiated again, it resumes where it left off - or does
the whole process start again from zero?

Updates are downloaded behind the scenes as you use your computer. If you shut off your
computer while an update is being downloaded, the download process will resume the next
time you turn your computer back on and it is connected to the Internet.

Haven't you got a friend/relative with high speed internet access who can download it for
you.

If you're letting it automatically download and install, that should be no
problem. If you're manually downloading it, an interruption will almost
surely cause the download to start all over again.

Let WU do it in the background and you will have it resume as previously
mentioned. It also will only download what it needs as if you are up to
date on your updates the file is about 90 mb for Vista86 and 120 for
Vista64. By all means, after you get it installed and working well, make a
full backup of your system so you will not have to go back thru it again if
future problems develop.

I'm not sure I understand the difference between "letting it
automatically download and install" and "manually
downloading". If, on my screen, I click updates, and I'm
told (as I am) that SP-1 is available and important, and I
then click "download/install now" is that what is meant by
your phrase "automatically"? If so, how is that different
than doing it "manually"?

Yes that is the same as automatically. Doing it manually involves going to
the download site and downloading the whole package (most of which you
probably have installed as updates since you installed Vista) as a stand
alone.
You will be shown a range of download sizes and a final download size as you
go thru the WU process to select and download. If you are up to date with
your updates, the sizes are around 85-90 mb for Vista86 and 120 mb for
Vista64.

Thanks for the answers.

Using my dial-up connection it took 9.5 hours to download
121.5 MB, and about 30 minutes to install. Everything seems
to be working just fine.
