SP 1 Time Consuming

Never did understand why anything microsoft does takes so long. I did the 65
mb SP 1 download this morning and it took an unbelievable amount of time to
download, install, configure. I downloaded UBUNTU, 700+mb's, installed and
was up and running in half the time. Don't get me wrong, I am a Windows
person, absolutely love Vista. I have XP on my other computer and will
upgrade soon to Vista. UBUNTU is just a curiosity thing and I have no
intention of making it my primary. Just wondering why it takes so long.

I used the full download (430 MB).
To install SP1 it took 42 minutes on my desktop, 80 minutes on my wife's
laptop.

well, no, mine said 65mb's, but I do auto update everyday.

It was 65 megs over here too, but it was the ***longest*** 65 megs that
I think I've ever experienced. : ) Windows Update didn't show the
actual download bitrate, but I'm guessing that it was a fraction of what
would normally be received.

One of the major reasons why installing SP1 takes a little long to install
is because the Windows Vista kernel is updated to bring the Vista kernel
(version 6.0) up to date with the version in Windows Server 2008 (version 6.1).

when you mean "download" you mean from within windows update..
yeah.. then its smaller
Usualy the term is called "update", while "download" means downloading a
seperate file on your pc

I was talking about the full download as a file from the microsoft site that
is 434.5 MB and has 5 languages inside
I fully realize this, as I've also downloaded the standalone 430+
megabyte version...but I allowed Windows Update to download/install only
the necessary files the other evening. Seriously--the 430+ meg download,
attempted later, went almost as quickly as the 65 meg download from
Windows Update...and I'm just talking download time, not the the time it
took to install the service pack.

took me a whopping 30 minutes on my laptop, 35 on my desktop from saying yes
to the update to the final reboot & desktop, I have cable internet BTW.

Simple. As you were downloading UBUNTU so were two other people. As you
were downloading SP1 for Vista so were two million other people.

MS servers are quick but on any given second, 24/7 from around the world I
suspect the number of users logged onto the MS servers be it downloading or
just browsing number in the hundreds of thousands. This of course ramps up
whenever a major item is released as was in the SP1 release for Vista.

It takes longer for the same reason that an upgrade install of the full
Vista OS takes longer than a clean install.

A service pack has to perform a lot of evaluating procedures and make
decisions on what can and cannot be installed. Every system is different and
the files that SP1 replaces or installs will be different for just about
every system out there.

I have installed the full Vista 'with' the integrated SP1 on several systems
and the installation takes approximately 35 minutes. The update of SP1 on
existing systems took around 3 hours.

Took me 52 minutes from the time i started dloading the 434 meg file till
the last reboot completed on a Dell XPS M2010 system with 2 gb ram , vista
ultimate and a cable modem. The only problem i had at all was the battery
status meter in the notification bar, was missing and the properties for it
was greyed out. 1 more reboot and it was back. Had no problems since.

Plus my system uses the sigmatel sound drivers that are said to be
incompatible but everything works great.
