I've just tried to get to windows update and was prestened
with this

dOperation, bstrXmlItems); HTTP/1.0 200 OK Server:
Microsoft-IIS/6.0 X-Powered-By: ASP.NET Content-Length:
7856 Content-Type: text/html Expires: Fri, 24 Oct 2003

Pragma: no-cache Date: Fri, 24 Oct 2003 23:52:28 GMT
X-Cache: MISS from kabaddi.mclc.org.uk X-Cache-Lookup: MISS
from kabaddi.mclc.org.uk:3000 Proxy-Connection: keep-alive

It's been happening on a few web pages I go to. Also at
ebay I can't follow a link unless I download a file. then
repress the link.

I'm running win2k IE6.0.28.00.1106

Any ideas?

A misbehaving or incompatible firewall can cause a symptom like that.
In view of the current proliferation of network malware you have to be
careful about running without some kind of port protection
but disabling or removing the firewall is usually the suggested test/fix.

FWIW I would try either disabling any tasks which opened unnecessary
ports or try changing the bindings in the manner suggested by Steve
Gibson on his Shields Up! site. NT4 also has provision for blocking ports.
Perhaps NT5 has a similar feature. I would use the following command
to determine which tasks and ports could be potential problems:

netstat -a -n -o | find /i "listening"

I found these articles which support those ideas somewhat:

http://securityadmin.info/faq6.asp#firewallproblem

<TITLE>309798 - HOW TO: Configure TCP/IP Filtering in Windows 2000</TITLE>

You probably should look for better advice from a newsgroup which
specializes in networking for your OS.

Good luck

Thanks tons :)

Disabled Norton and everything worked fine, well on the way to sorting
now.
