IE6 not using cache on one site

R

Robert

I can't seem to get IE6 to cache this one site:
www.wilhitephotoimages.com
Other sites work fine. This site works fine with other browsers. Tried
different ISP's, computers and OS's but the problem seems to be with IE6.
Makes navigating the site real slow. Even going back a page, IE has to
reload the page from the server. Plus the mouseovers take way too long. I've
looked at the headers, but can't see any reason IE wouldn't cache it:

HTTP/1.1 200 OK
Date: Fri, 12 Dec 2003 07:06:47 GMT
Server: Apache/1.3.27 (Unix)
Vary: Host
Last-Modified: Fri, 24 Jan 2003 20:54:00 GMT
ETag: "fb913-50c-3e31a7e8"
Accept-Ranges: bytes
Content-Length: 1292
Connection: close
Content-Type: text/html

BTW, this is not my site, so I have no way to get any info that you can't
get.

Anyone have any ideas how to make IE use cache with this site or what's
going on here?

Thanks!

You may need to clear your TIF as you may have a corrupt file there.

Close all instances of OE and IE
Control Panel | Internet Options | General tab
Click the "Delete Files" button, when prompted place a check in:
"Delete all offline content", click OK
Click the "Clear History" button, click OK.
Click the Settings button, adjust the TIF size to 50 mb, click OK

Hopefully, I'll get a chance to go through that tomorrow, but don't think
there could be the same problem with the cache on four different machines.

Here is another site I'm having the same cache problems with:
www.rdiadvertising.com
No frames, still has the redirection to another page, but I don't think that
shouldn't make any difference. I think both these sites are hosted by the
same hosting service.

Are you not having any problems with IE6 and these sites?

I'm checked with IE6 on Win98SE and WinXP Home. All security patches
installed. At first, I thought that maybe that pesky 824145 update was to
blame, but uninstalling it makes no difference. Also checked with IE5.5 on
Win95 and there is no problem there. Also no problem with Netscape.

Any other ideas?

Thanks!

I'm on high speed as well, but I can tell the site is not caching. In fact I
find the site works best on a Win95 IE5.5 machine on dialup. It's more
noticeable on the second site (www.rdiadvertising.com) and especially on the
mouseovers on the menu. You can hover over an item and there is a lag before
the image changes. Move off it and another lag as the original image is
reloaded from the web. The IE animation starts up every time you hover over
an item or move off it. It's annoying on high speed, but horribly slow when
browsing with IE6 on dialup! After clearing the cache, I've noticed that I
can browse the entire site, but no files are put in my cache. The site is
not being cached. And only on IE6.

I'm not sure it's the js that's causing the problem. I used a program to
mirror the site and uploaded it to space on my web host. It works great
there. Seems to be some connection with their hosting and IE6. Also noticed
that when I right click an image and select save, it will only save as a
..bmp. Maybe some copy protection employed by their hosting that is keeping
it out of cache too.

I can't find a machine with IE6 that will cache on these sites. Do you have
all the latest security patches and service packs installed? What OS are you
using?

Thanks!

TIF from these sites are a couple of .js files and a couple of .html files

Thanks for that samspade.org link! I had been using telnet. Telnetting from
windows to unix, then from that unix to the web site which is also unix,
because I couldn't get telnet from windows to unix to send the request
properly. Probably those extra characters in the line feeds.

What can be causing the cache problem? This is really beginning to bug me!

What OS are you using? Have you installed all the latest security patches?
I'm wondering if one of those patches may have some sort of problem. I tried
uninstalling that buggy 824145 patch, but that didn't help. I'm thinking
that if most people using IE6 were having problems, the site would get
fixed, but then again, most people probably don't keep their system fully
patched either. Just a random thought.

Thanks for taking the time to check this out! I was hoping to get the input
of others and figure out what is the common issue. OS, ISP, patch, other???
Or maybe some web guru that could comment on some aspect of the code or how
their servers are set up.

problems with other sites.

How To: Delete the Internet Explorer Temporary Internet Files
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

Hopefully, I'll get a chance to go through that tomorrow, but don't
think
there could be the same problem with the cache on four different
machines.

<snip>

Here is another site I'm having the same cache problems with:
www.rdiadvertising.com
No frames, still has the redirection to another page, but I don't think
that
shouldn't make any difference. I think both these sites are hosted by
the
same hosting service.

Are you not having any problems with IE6 and these sites?

I'm checked with IE6 on Win98SE and WinXP Home. All security patches
installed. At first, I thought that maybe that pesky 824145 update was
to
blame, but uninstalling it makes no difference. Also checked with IE5.5
on
Win95 and there is no problem there. Also no problem with Netscape.

Any other ideas?

Thanks!

I can't seem to get IE6 to cache this one site:
www.wilhitephotoimages.com
Other sites work fine. This site works fine with other browsers.
Tried
different ISP's, computers and OS's but the problem seems to
be
with
IE6.
Makes navigating the site real slow. Even going back a page,
IE
has
to
reload the page from the server. Plus the mouseovers take way too
long.

I'm out of ideas as to why (cache), if it's just that server or those two
sites, it must be something in the script? (guessing)

Mike,

Are you using anything like ProxOmitron or WebWasher?
(E.g., something that could be filtering out HTTP 1/1 directives.)

Both of those sites are using Vary: Host which would be my guess
for what is causing it. I tried switching to HTTP 1.0 but it is still coming.

(Google web search for
vary http rfc
)

Pages at this site must be using a no_cache meta tag in
the <TITLE> </TITLE> section of the page.

The same thing happens with just one of its images:

Load it up. Set Work Offline and press Ctrl-N.
It isn't in the cache so the Ctrl-N fails.

The only thing in the headers related to caching is that
Vary: Host

Paul Baranowski in his thread had a similar symptom.
He thinks that it may be related to compression and he uses that
to explain why

If you right click on an image in IE and go to "Properties", you will
see that the image size is unknown.

The properties of the above image has the same attributes.
However, there doesn't seem to be any sign of compression
being used on it. The only common factor that I can see
is that the vary: header is being used in both transmissions.

Rob, et al.

My users (of www.pluginz.com) and I experienced the same exact
problems with IE6 on XP not caching pages from the site.
After adding and modifying as many non-effective headers WRT Expires,
Last-Modified and Cache-Control as possible, I finally had Apache
unset the Vary: Host header, et Voila! it cached the page!

The line I used in the Apache config was:
Header unset Vary

(this required mod_header)

Your implimentation may differ...
Enjoy!
