Sounds

When I go into my control panel,and then into sounds and
devices i can see what sound is applied to each function.
I can click on the play button and here the sound. the
problem is none of the functions are playing the sound
that there suppose to play. I can change a sound and
apply it and then hit the ok ,but when i go out from
there ,there is no sound for that particular function?
Any Ideas what to try.
