sounds not working in outlook

have a specific .wav file set up to play every time I get a new e-mail. A
couple weeks ago it quit working. Nothing seems to have changed, so I can't
figure out why it stopped. Instead of the sound, a barely audible beep comes
from the tower. I usually don't heart it.

1. Play a sound is still checked in the options
2. wav file is still showing up in "sound scheme" menu.
3. Windows default sounds do not work either.

My OS is Windows XP. (SP2)

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like your sound card is having issues. This isn't an Outlook problem,
but a computer hardware problem.

The .wav plays correctly in the sound preview part of "sound and audio device
properties" box, all sounds work in media player etc...
