soundmax audio device not always loaded

I have a Dell Dimension 2400, with Windows XP, Altec Lansing speakers,
and Soundmax audio device installed and have gotten fed up with a
recurring problem. The Soundmax audio device is not always loaded,
does not appear in the sys tray (I have it set to), and in the System
folder it say that it is not working. Sometimes it loads properly.
When I restart the computer it almost always works properly. I have
been to the Dell Website; the latest driver is installed and other
suggestions like disabling other programs at startup do not help. Any
suggestions for this frustrating problem would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Glenn,

Suggestion:

Uninstall the sound card from device manager, then restart and let XP
install the drivers for you.

I wish the solution were this easy, I tried this already but there has
been no change. The soundmax device still appears only intermittently
on startup.
