Installed XP pro for the first time, installed
soundblaster audigy 2 platinum sound card, made sure
everything is connected, installed drivers. Creative
little startup application plays a little music/sound
when I startup my computer..but I am not getting sound
from anything else. Tested Direct Sound and the test
failed. What am I missing?

Check the items outlined here...

"Where did my sound go?"

If you installed the Windows XP drivers for that card, make sure that IF YOU
DO NOT have a digital speaker system: Go to Control Panel/Sounds and Audio
Devices. I don't have the SAME SoundBlaster card, so the following
directions might be a bit different for your card. On the Sound tab, click
the Advanced button, which brings up the Playback Control box, click the
Advanced button there, and REMOVE the checkmark to the left of the option:
Digital Output Only. The option for Digital Output Only might be located
somewhere else. This is only the fix if the problem is due to the setting
being Digital Output Only, and if you don't have a digital speaker system.

If that isn't the case, try opening the mixer and seeing if any of the
fields are checked MUTE, and also check that there ARE fields for all of the
sound playback devices that you use. If there aren't, then click the
Options menu in the mixer, then click Properties, and add playback devices
like CD Audio, Wav/MP3, Midi, or whatever is missing, and then make sure the
volume for those fields aren't muted, and the volume is set high enough.
Also make sure that the power is turned on for your speaker system (I know
that's basic, but some people forget).

If none of the above is helpful, use the link in Dev's post for Kelly's FAQ.
