As of this morning, sound was working on computer. This afternoon, sound
does not work. Media player does not play, dvd's, etc. Messages received
were:

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with
your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your
computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning
properly."

Also, I get a box saying my sound mixer is not working, to go to printer
files and install new hardware.

I don't have a sound mixer.

I DID install Norton Internet Security. Would that have anything to do with
it.

How do I get my sound back.

So what the heck is going on. After posting this and the computer sat for a
few minutes, the sound is back. After not working for 3-4 hours today.

Click Start > Run, type in: devmgmt.msc and press Enter.
Are there any devices listed as Other or Unknown?

Expand "Sound, video and game controllers".
Is your sound device listed?
Does it show to have any conflicts? Indicated by a red x or yellow exclamation
(bang).
If it is present:
Double click it to open it's properties.
Under the General tab, is it shown as working or is there an error explanation?

You may be able to repair it by either rolling back the driver(s) or updating it,
click the driver tab for the options. If you want to update the driver(s), go to the
manufacturers support site and download/install the latest updated drivers if
available per their instructions.

If you roll the driver(s) back, after doing so update them as per above.
