Sound Themes Not Working

The sound thems have stopped working on my computer. I am
using Windows XP Home Edition. The start-up and shutdown
sounds do not play, along with all the others. The sounds
still appear in the control panel under "Sounds", and the
theme is still selected, they just don't play. Any
suggestions???
 
Check in control panel--administrative tools--services--Windows audio.
