Don't know if anyone here can help, but I can't solve the
problem, so its worth a shot.

I am running Windows XP (home edition). I updated the
signature file on my Norton Antivirus 2002 (part of
SystemWorks 2002). Ever since the update, my sound is
not working properly. If you turn the speaker volume to
max, you can barely hear the sounds but they are there.
I have already verified sound settings, drivers, etc.
The sound was working fine until I updated the anti-virus
signatures. Windows Media Player was running during the
update, but not playing anything....don't think that
should have caused any problems. Anyone have any clues
as what my problem is and how to fix it?

Thanks in advance for any help

Its happened to me too, reinstalled the manufacturer
software from provided cd and all is well. Don't have it?
Go to soundblaster.com or whomever and download the
software; most often, updates are free.

Not a good idea to have anything running when installing files, especially
from third party software. You try System Restore to go back to a time just
before the file was installed.
