Sound problems

I've a problem with my sound and I can't figure what's causing it and I'd
appreciate any help you all can give me. I have sound if I play an audio CD
or if I go to a web page that has sound clips but I don't have sound from
windows actions (startup, shutdown, etc) or from AOL. I went into device
manager but I don't see any obvious problems. I'm thinking that this is a
problem I've had before on other computers but I just don't remember how I
fixed it. TIA
