Sound problems

I hear no sound on my computer in any use except on Rhapsody. In any other
software, MSN or message there is no sound. Since Rhapsody works I assume
the sound card and speakers are working. I admit I am pretty dumb, but must
I take this to a shop to fix? I hate being w/o my computer for 3 days!

Control Panel / sounds and audio devices
would be where you would snoop around.

Make sure DirectX is ok, and run the sound test.
decreasing the sound acceleration helps sometimes.
