Sound problem

I have a Sony Vaio laptop with Windows XP and until recently no problem with
sound. Now
theonly new thing I did was download a new virus scanner and now when I
first start the computer I get the initial sound but after windows loads I
have no sound. I must restart and then get the sound back. It seems like the
sound drivers are not loading initially but only after the restart. Any
suggestions?

Have you tried reinstalling or updating your sound device drivers to see if it
rectifies the issue?

I have a brand new (well 2 mos. old ) motherboard, replace for another
issue. They have been fine until 2 or 3 days ago.
