Sound Problem...!

Okay.

A few days back I shut down my computer, because of a glitch, and when i
turned it back on, there was no sound. This has happened before, and I
usually fix it by just rebooting. Well, rebooting did not work this time.

I rebooted twice, and then decided to check out WMP. It said that the device
was busy. So I decided to check on my speaker. Windows XP is not recognizing
that I have a speakers, when at the time, it was playing system sounds.

Well, I rebooted again, hoping it was a glitch. No such luck. It started to
not play system sounds.

Now it plays nothing, and says that there may be a problem with the sound
card, but I don't know how to fix it if it is.

I've been everywhere troubleshooting and all, but it doesn't say what to do,
if your speakers are hooked up correctly, but it doesn't recognize them....

(I also tried the speakers elsewhere they work fine...)

So... Help?!

I installed MS Project and when I restarted my sound wouldn't work. I'm not a
computer person but when I opened the sound volumn window it showed the sound
driver wasn't installed or activated, whatever. I did a system restore.
Didn't help. Finally went to the MS web site. Did the auto/ express updates
(for everything). Took about 10 minutes. When the computer restarted the
sound is fine now. Don't know what exactly fixed it but it works and I'm
smiling again. It's worth a try. I did all the step by step trouble shoot
steps and just kept getting frustrated. Rick.

Thank you, But I had done this before, and It didn't work. In fact, I assumed
when it said that it was Archiving my files that it would save them. Well, It
deleted ALL my music files, except for ones I had on file from Limewire. So
now, I'm a bit... Sunk.

No worries though, that was my fault, I did that before you even suggested
it. :)

But this didn't help. In fact, Its made my computer more tempermental. Which
is VERY bad. Ha.

Hi C:

I've had the exact problem, and narrowed it to some type of conflict with
Adobe software. It seems the flash player and acrobat products conflicted
with my itunes, resulting in the "No audio device" appearing in the sounds
and audio devices folder in the control panel. When I uninstalled all the
Adobe products, the sound card was recognized again. Key word being "seems".
I knew it was a temporary fix, because so many things utilize Adobe. Before
I could spend more time trying to track this down, I had a new problem...no
windows xp updates are recognized. My system appears to be installed with the
sp1 service pack. I ran the express update last night, and now the soundcard
is not recognized again. This probably doesn't help you at all, other than
letting you know that you aren't the only one with this problem.

Thank you, Byte, this restored my system sound, and Now I can play my
remaining media files.

But now I have another oddity. It won't let me play internet sound files,
Like Youtube, and Gaming files....

Any ideas?
