I was listening to music on media player and the sound stopped. i can
see the music playing but no sound comes out. I have checked all the
usual probs of mute on the sound control etc and have followed
microsoft help instructions but no luck. I have even bought new
speakers but they do not work either. Could it be the sound card or
does anyone have any good advice as i am struggling
A. Look in Event Viewer for clues:
Start>Run>eventvwr.msc [enter]
B. Uninstall/reinstall video card drivers. Never get drivers from
Windows Update. Get them from:
1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM
computer (HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).
Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the
drivers.
To find out what hardware is in your computer:
1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific
model machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers
anyway)
3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc
Advisor. The older Aida32 is good for this, too.

C. If A. shows nothing useful and B. doesn't work, if computer is a
desktop swap out the sound card with a known-working one, or if sound
is onboard disable it in the BIOS and add a PCI sound card. You can buy
a basic sound card for under $20 usd.
