Sound Problem - EXPERT help needed...

Ok, please, please, please don't send me to the troubleshooter- been there done that

Herein lies the problem

Sounds don't play in Windows XP Pro OS, but DO play in media player. Example: "Windows Logon.wav" does not play upon the event, but media player can play it. In the Sound setting window for sound schemes, the "play" button next to the event/sound correlation assignment goes from "play" to "stop" icons, as if the sound is playing, but no-go. I can go right to WMP and play the exact same sound no problem. Needless to say, anything that plays within Windows without spawning a new player does not work

Yes, my speakers are turned on. Yes, my driver is up to date and WQHL'd. Again, it will play all these sounds in WMP, but not on the sound scheme window or in Windows without an external player.

is the "Windows Sound" service running? Set its startup type to
"Automatic".

I don't seem to have "windows sound" running as a service when I run
MSconfig nor does it seem to be a running process.
How do I find out where "windows sound" service is?

I have XP Home with an external Creative Audigy 2 NX card

TIA

Please may I ask why not?

actually, it's the "Windows Audio" service, not windows sound. sorry...

Using msconfig to disable a service is somewhat of a kludge, msconfig is
intended to ONLY be used as a short-term debugging tool, to try something
out briefly before making permanent config changes [unlike the msconfig
in W98, which many of us used on a permanant basis]. To truely disable a
service you should go thru the Services MMC snap-in and change its startup
type.

If you want a tool to disable startup "junk", get the Startup Control
Panel by Mike Lin:

http://www.mlin.net/

there are other tools that do the same thing, like Startup Cop, but Mike's
control panel has been a staple for years, and it works well.

I had the same problem, and found this article in the KB:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;262256&

Worked for me! Now I have my sounds back.
I've just tried this (i have xp home)
and it says (default) REG SZ (value not set) in HKEY_CURRENT_USER
I tried to delete this but it wont let me
I went to the sound folder in HKEY_CURRENT_USER and deleted those but I
still have no sound

I've already deleted and reinstalled drivers, disabled integrated sound in
the BIOS. I am using an external soundblaster audigy 2 NX card. I've tried
Kelly's registry tweak

Is the only option now to reinstall xp?

TIA
