Sound on P4C800ED- any documentation?

Michael Hobbs

I built a computer based on the P4C800ED for a friend. The OS is XP-Pro.
This lady is quite computer aware, and uses a computer professionally as a
medical transcriptionist. She is asking if there is any documentation on
the SoundMax driver and software that came with this motherboard. For
example, she sees the word 'phone' somewhere in the Soundmax program and
wonders if that means recording from a telephone- which is something she
does.
Janet has located a SoundMax web site but finds it less than helpful as
there is no way apparently no useable search function.

I am hoping someone can help here, I built this computer for her and sent it
off including documentation so I don't have as much in resources as I would
like, either. I know the fall-back is to disable onboard sound, uninstal the
software and just install a Soundblaster audio card. I am resisting for the
time being.

Thanks

There is a section in the MoBo manual that covers the sound software. If
she doesn't have the hard copy of the user guide she can get a PDF at the
ASUS site.

See item 14 in the user manual. It describes the "modem" four pin
connector. The four pins are modem-in, modem-out and two grounds.
The manual says the modem-in can be connected to a voice modem
card. A card like that, has to have at least a DAA (an interface
for isolating the electrical levels on the phone from the
computer). The Voice Modem card would have ringing detection,
and you'd want to check that there is some kind of interface
(TAPI?) for controlling the modem card, to do the kind of
application you want. (Never owned one.)

In terms of the AC97 chip on the board, the datasheet is here.

It could be the "modem" connector, is wired to "phone_in"
and "mono_out", as nothing else makes much sense for this
application.

Thanks Paul. I sent your reply to Janet and hope that she will not be shy
about posting here.
Done multiple computers based on Asus boards. This one is quite out of my
control as this friend is a very long ways away.
