Sometimes when using itunes I lose all sound and get a really loud static
sound instead.
Also when using other Windows functions I will get a strange crackle sound
rather than an alert or error message sound when the message box appears.
I have recently downloaded the new itunes. I have used the XP and Itunes
troubleshooters without success and my sound card seems to be working
properly.
Any ideas will be much appreciated.

The latest iTunes is a good example of releasing software before it's
had time to be fully tested in "Real-World" environments.
Best to roll-back to a "Previous Version" of iTunes and wait for the
patched/updated version to re-appear.

I can't load an old Itunes if I still have the new one. If I delete the new
one first will I lose my library?

I don't believe that uninstalling the iTunes application will remove the
existing library of iTunes songs from the PC. (Usually stored as a
sub-folder of your profile's My Music path)

Hopefully, you have your iTunes library backed up to some form or
permanent media like CD/DVD-R(W) disks. This is a good idea no
matter how you use iTunes.

Have you checked with Apple tech support on your issue ? I was
aware of the issues with the latest release only because I read several
technical news websites that mentioned the problems.

Unfortunately the old itunes won't read the the songs, which have now been
converted to be read by the new itunes.

Maybe you should contact iTunes tech support for help with their product?
