For those of you with "metallic" or high-pitched sound after importing the
clip into the timeline - here's the content of an email I received last
night

PapaJohn,
I feel REALLY stupid! I have been tearing out my hair trying to figure out
the sound problems with MM2, blaming on software and/or hardware problems,
but it turns out it is a operator error (well, sort of).
I noticed that my camera was recording sound in 12 bit mode instead of 16
bit mode. I switched to 16bit and wouldn't you know it, PROBLEM SOLVED!
The sound distortion in the timeline cleared up! Tried it using 12 bit
sound just to make sure, and distortion came back.
I'm not sure if this will solve the problem others are having, but it looks
like this elusive problem is solved for me. Don't know why MM2 has a
problem with 12 bit sound when other programs don't, but at least I know
what I need to do to use MM2 in the future. It's just too bad that all of
my vacation tapes were recorded using 12 bit sound! I guess Microsoft
solving the 12 bit sound issue would be a dream come true, but at least I
know the problem.
Hope this helps. Thanks again for all of your help.

Followup email this morning, from the same person:
Update / FYI - I have confirmed with one other user that the 12 bit audio
was the source of his problems as well.
