sound distorted after destructive reformat

after my reformat, i had no sound. i have downloaded drivers for the realek
ac'97 and av rack. however, the sound is not normal, also the windows volume
control will not control volume. i can only control volume through ac'97.

Commonly the cause of this kind of problem is that you didn't install the
motherboard drivers right after the basic XP install. Find those and
install them now; you may have to uninstall and reinstall the Realtek
drivers.
