sound device

i just installed a legit windows xp home addition and now i have no sound
device it says when i try to play music. HELP!! i have no clue what to do

So after installing winxp you installed chipset and other drivers from your
provided cd's or manu sites?
 
"Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with
your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your
computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be
functioning properly."

This is the message i'm getting and i've tried everything. Would appreiciate
any help.....
