sound card mixer

hi-
i want to convert my cassette tapes to digital, but before i record
anything, i want to be sure the input is being amplified enough. how do
i find my sound card mixer? it may or may not be the windows mixer, i
do not know. where is that too, for that matter? thanks a bunch.
