Sound Bar & Control Panel problem

I have a Sony laptop and recently reinstalled my WinXP Pro. All went well
but I have two problems. First, I have an external volumn control. In the
past, while adjusting the volumn, I would see green bars increasing or
decreasing according. Since the reinstallation, they do not appear. Second,
when I click in the control panel from the start menu or the My Computer
screen, and I want to change the view from classic to category, it freezes
up. By all other accounts, everything works great. Suggestions?

Whenever you reinstall an operating system, you also need to install
drivers for your hardware. Go to Sony's tech support site for your
specific laptop and download all drivers and special software for your
machine.

I have done that. First, I used the dics that came with the computer.
Secondly, I have used all the updates listed on the web site., Everytime I
downloaded an update during the past year, I saved same in my documents.
This still has not corrected the problem. I just formatted the hard drive
again and installed the OS and drivers. The control panel issue is gone but
the sound level bars issue remains. However, I noticed that when I installed
the drivers, I got an error message for driver "VIA FIR VT1211 Device Driver"
did not install. I do not know what that driver is for. That could be the
source of my problem. I tried to re-install just that driver with no
success. Thoughts?

I think that's the driver for your infrared and if you don't have that
device on your laptop (or use it), you don't need it. From your
description, it sounds like a specialized multimedia keyboard program
that allowed you to use the external controls, and this program would
be coming from Sony. If you really think you've installed - and
configured - all your keyboard multimedia software and you're still not
seeing what you used to, I'd contact Sony tech support. I don't have a
Sony laptop, so don't have a precise answer for you. I'm sorry.

Good luck,

Malke
