sorting of index entries beginning with special character

I have to index a document containing many words beginning with a special
characters (e.g. greek characters) or numbers in the format "number-word" or
"special character-word". Is there a possibility to say Word to sort these
entries according to the first character of the word after the hyphen, so
that e.g. "5-Hydroxylysin" would appear in the index under the letter "H"?

Hi Pius

There are two ways.

Either select only "Hydroxylysin" and do Insert > Reference > Index and
Tables. On the Index tab, click "Mark Entry". You will see that the Main
Entry box only holds Hydroxylysin, so that is the entry that will appear in
the index.

Or, selec the whole word "5-Hydroxylysin" and proceed as above. When you see
the Mark Index Entry dialog, change the Main Entry box to delete the "5-".

If you have a lot of these to do, it's worth knowing that ALT+SHIFT+X is a
shortcut to the "Mark Entry" dialog box.

Depending on your needs, you might also like to investigate how the
Sub-entry field works. If you also had entries for 3-Hydroxylysin and
4-Hydroxylysin, then you could use the Sub-entry to store the number. You
would then get an index with a heading of Hydroxylysin, and sub-entries 3, 4
and 5.
