Sorting Left to Right

I'm having problems with a left-right sort. I've done it before
(successfully) but am having problems with a spreadsheet.

I insert the row at the top (Row 1) and insert the numbers for the order I
want to sort (1 through to 8).

When I go to Data, Sort, Options and select the Left to Right option, the
Sort dialog box doesn't list the row 1 which has my left to right sort order.

I can't work out what is different, I've tried selecting the list and
clearing formats, I've tried inserting two rows at the top so my sort order
is in Row 2, but then I can't access Row 1 or 2.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

are you able to hit options and selecting left to right

Yes... (I've done this before successfully).

I insert a blank row (at the top of the xls). Select a cell within the list.
Select Data menu, Sort (it has a Header row). Click on Options, select Left
to Right. Click OK and it comes up with the Sort row as Row 2... when I
select the drop-down I can't select Row 1 (which is where the L-R sort values
are).

The spreadsheet was initially created from a txt file imported using the
Import Wizard. The headings were originally formatted with Wrap Text... got
rid of that but it didn't help. I've selected all the data and tried Clear,
Formats.
