sorting a text field like a number field

I have a text field for id # - it is messing up the sorts since they look
more like #'s anyway to sort a text field in numerical order???

does that make sense?

I don't understand the question. It would help if you give examples of a
few of the ID numbers. Describe the order in which they are actually
sorted, and the order in which you wish them to be sorted.
