Sort a column of numbers

B

Bill Fellows

Hello:
I have a column of 100 numbers that I want to sort in descending order.
Each of the 100 numbers is the result of a formula. When I shade the
range and apply the Sort function, there is no response.

If I have a column of 100 actual numbers (that is, no formulas), I have
no problem sorting. I suppose an alternate approach to the above
problem is if there was a way to convert a cell with a formula in it
into an actual number. Then, I could sort that column.

I hope I have explained this problem well enough. Thank you.

Bill

Do a Copy > Paste Special > Values on your range of formulas to change the
formulas into fixed values, then it will sort...........

FWIW,
Cells with formulas *do* sort.
However, when the "cell" moves, the formula with relative references will
update, therefore giving the same result, and the *appearence* of not
sorting.

Try this:
In A1:A5 enter 1:5
In B1:B5 enter 6:10
In C1 and D1 enter =A1*B1 and copy down to Row5
Now change D1:D5 to absolutes, =$A$1*$B$1, =$A$2*$B$2 ... etc.

Now, select C1:D5
And sort on *ColumnC*, descending.

See what happened!
Even though you sorted on C, only D moved, and C *appeared* not to move,
though we know that C *had* to move, in order to drag D along with it.
