I have posted before that when I go into > control panel
system >general...under registered to: I have nothing.
Then under advanced > start up and recovery, I
have: "Microsoft Windows Whistler Personal / fast
detect " I'm told I have a beta version. I would love
tons of view points on this, as I need to know what I can
do. I've called the store that sold this computer with
Windows already installed ( I have a 2 year extended
warranty)..they told me I would have to call HP for a
solution. If this is not a real or legal copy of Windows,
what would you do or suggest I do ? What is the
difference of my copy ? Is it possible to put a brand new
boxed version of Windows over this version (deleting
everything)? If I can put a new copy over this one, how
can this be done ? Sorry, I'm very much a beginner and
just lately been peeking into what I really have and
trying to learn this computer stuff. Thank You for any
info or advice. Greatly appreciated

You need to do several things...
Call the local district attorney because the store that sold
you the computer is crooked.
2. Call MS and report the store, tell MS about your contact
with the DA.
3. File a law suit with the small claims court if the store
does not provide you with a legal retail copy of XP.
4 The "store" sold you a HP computer case that they
refurbed and installed a pirated copy of XP. Trying to pawn
you of to HP. Also, your 2 year warranty was from what
company?

the whistler going into safemode is normal with an hp.

you have an oem hp version of xp and you do need to
contact hp for support.

i would never buy a computer with a system save partition
or restore/recovery cds but that is the choice you made.

no i would not buy a retail copy and install it in place
of the oem version, there are drivers for your hardware on
the oem cd/partition that may not be on the retail
version.

live and learn and next time get an oem with a retail
style cd or with an actual retail cd only.

.Thank You Jim for your advice.I called the store
manager yesterday and he seemed like he was defending his
store quite alot. I need to check more into the warranty,
as far as if it's from the store or actually from HP. I
believe it's the store warranty. This computer was given
as a gift from a friend and he needs to check more into
things too, before he speaks his mind. This was the first
time in my life putting my hands on a computer ( talk
about newbie ) that is why, what I've learned and know
now, that I would never buy a computer with Windows
already installed. I can remember having troubles before
with this system and calling HP and they told me because
the warranty has expired, I would have to pay for advice
or solutions. That is why I think it's a store warranty.
I did have to do a system recovery (according to the
manual, as I do not have the system restore cd) Would
this have anything to do with "Whistler Personal" showing
up on my computer? I also have had to go into safe mode
at one time. Would this have anything to do
with "Whistler Personal" showing up, as being normal as
Richard has suggested? How do I know if I'm in safe mode
or normal ? I had to go to safe mode one time because of
MY stupidity when one of Microsofts updates put a
user "asp.net" on my computer,I made that account
administrator and myself as a guest and locked myself out
of my own computer.I'm laughing now, but it wasn't funny
then. Thank You again..Jim and Richard and sorry for all
these questions and my stupidity on these things, but I
do appreciate your time and thoughts. Mikki

Look over the CPU case carefully. If this is a legitimate copy of XP
from HP there should be a sticker affixed with a WinXP product key
containing HP's name. It must be somewhere on the case. If it is not
there then that is additional proof that you have been scammed.

In addition, you should have received a paper Certificate of
Authenticity with a Microsoft hologram logo affixed.

An "oem" version of Whistler? From HP? Come on now. Whistler was the Code
name for WinXP while it was under development.

.
Hi Quaoer, I did find the sticker and the product key on
it, and also went to this web site :::www.howtotell,
however after going through the steps here, I seem to get
stuck on question number 4. I can't find the letter D on
this sticker, so I clicked "no" to this question and it
directs me to a HP recovery web-site and how to order a
recovery disc.As far as the Certificate of Authenticity,
I'm not sure, I need to look for that.
Thank You for your advice & time
Mickie
