Sony video files

I find it impossible to convert my video film so that I can edit it with
Movie Maker. My camera is a Sony handycam DCR-SR35E. The files appear to be
..mpg. When I try to import them into Movie Maker I get the message: “[the
file could not be imported]. An interface has too many methods to fire events
fromâ€
I have now downloaded Windows Media Encoder. When I try to convert these
files I get the error message: “Windows Media Encoder has encountered a
problem and needs to close………â€
I am stuck. Is there someone who has encountered the same problem and solved
it?

Which problem do you have?
Unable to import or unable to use WME, or even both?
