SONY VAIO RB52 can't boot Windows

Hi. I bought a SONY VAIO RB52 and it stopped booting recently.
I can bring up the boot option menu, but after I select "Safe Mode" or
whatever, it gave me a black screen.
Somebody said that was because of the bad memory.
I tried to remove one 512M memory and keep another one, and put it in
different slot.
But nothing helps.
What is it? Harddrive problem? Then why can it give me the booting
options.
Maybe I should install another OS (XP or Win2K) in order to get my data
back.
Then I can run recovery DVD.
Please help.

Take the machine back to the vendor and let him scan it for errors.
