Sony laptop win XP hangs up

My Sony Laptop with Windows XP hangs up and I have to hold down the on/off
button to shut it off. Control-alt-delete does nothing.

There are some times I can use it for an hour or more and it won't hang up
and there are times it will stop right in the middle of start-up.

I can run check disk and that seems to help for a short time but it starts
doing it again after using the laptop a few times.

I have downloaded AVG virus scan and updated it and did not find any
viruses.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks, David

Hi,

Freezes are usually attributed to faulty hardware. A system fault would
normally result in a spontaneous reboot or stop error (depending on
settings). You may need to have this diagnosed in a shop.

Which Vaio laptop? There are several systemic problems with several
models that will cause this - RAM socket solder joint failure, plugged
heat pipe radiator, etc. Repost to
