sony handycam, can't capture videos

sorry, this is going to be long, because i am very frustrated.

I have a sony handycam and I am trying to get the videos onto my computer.
before i had vista everything worked fine, now it does not work.
When I use sony's own program ( picture package ) with usb-stream I can get
the videos but without audio ( yes I tried every sound device ), when I try
plug-and-burn, my camera is not recognised.

Then i tried Windows Movie Maker, this can't find the camera
Then I tried Roxio Creator, this captures exactly 7 seconds everytime, then
I get an undefined error message and it stops.

Can anyone recommend a program or method that actually does what it is
supposed to do?

Use firewire. USB is not designed for video capture.
