Ok, so my laptop came w/ the Sonic cd/dvd program. (& I'm assuming it's a
real basic version)

What I'm *trying * to do is copy & save an unprotected dvd on my HD so I can
email it to friends. But I'm not sure this Sonic thing does that. ('least not
this version)

Does it? If not, what're my options?

Thanx!

A full version of Roxio or Nero will let you do what you want.

My notebook came with some Sonic software too.... it was one of the first
things that was uninstalled. It allowed me to do almost nothing that I
wanted. 'Lite' was not quite the word I'd use for it!

Either of the two programs above will let you copy a DVD and burn a new one
from it. What you seem to want to do is edit a VOB file from a DVD... I'd
probably suggest WinDVD Creator (www.intervideo.com) for that... but for
emailing? VOB files are big. You could save it as a WMV and it would be
much smaller but I'd still probably use a service like www.yousendit.com for
that as you're unlikely to get it to email size (max 10mb usually) without
the resolution being terrible.

Thanks for replying.

This version of Sonic I have *does* allow copying/ burning dvds, but
what I wanna do is just copy it into my HD. (so I can email it out)
Do-able?

I don't know what a "VOB" is.

Thanks again.

VOB is the file extension for the video files on the DVD. They are usually
about 1.4gb in size each. If you tried to email 1.4gb, I think your ISP
would (quite rightly) refuse to accept it. It would also take several hours
to upload it to the email server.

You can convert the VBO to something more manageable.. like a WMV or MPEG,
but you're going to have to do some editing to get 1.4gb down to under 10mb
which will be emailable. Even a 10mb file will clog most mailboxes. You
should always email the recipient to ensure they can receive a file of such
size and warm them it is on its way first.
