Somethings very wrong with my computer

Okay, so i've been tooling around the registry, trying to
understand adive that was given to me earlier (i'm trying
to get rid of damage caused by a virus) and all of a
sudden, all my icons aren't connected to anything. Or .exe
things. When i go to control panel/folder options, it's
empty...What did i do? i should have backed up my regedit
prior to this i know...is there anything i can do? thanks,

The first thing I would try would be to use System Restore to go back to
an earlier time. You might have to do it from the Safe Mode.

Nobody knows what you did because you didn't tell us anything other than
that you were "tooling around the registry". Try to restore your system to a
point before you were tooling around. If that doesn't fix your current
problem, you may have to reinstall XP. The moral of the story - which I'm
telling you from personal experience, believe me - is don't go tooling
around if you don't have the tools to do it.
