Hi All

Can you help? Yesterday after being on the PC for most of the day I noticed
that virtually all of my desktop and start menu icons had been wiped and set
to the standard SHELL32 default icon. I didn't worry about it too much at
the time thinking that they'd be reset when I booted up this morning - but
no, they are still wiped. I've run a virus check with NAV 2005 but it has
found nothing and I know I didn't do anything to cause this. I've tried
going into each shortcut to change the icon back but the icon is shown
correctly in there and for some programs this works but others stubbornly
refuse to change back or, in the case of IE and Outlook, they don't give me
the option - Explorer pointed at the Desktop shows these as System Folders.
I usually run Firefox as my browser and its main icon was unaffected but no
I'm finding that Firefox Internet Shortcuts are showing the SHELL32 default
icons - even any new internet shortcuts that I create don't show correctly.

Does anybody have any idea what could have happened and how I can go about
correcting everything?

Many thanks

JT

Hi JT,

Not sure what you mean by "standard SHELL32 default icon". Perhaps a screenshot would help.

Meanwhile, you may try these options:

1. System Restore rollback to a previous date
2. Repair icons using Tweak UI
3. Delete the iconcache.db (Hidden file present in this location: %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data )

Glad you got this fixed, JT. And thanks for the screenshot.

Thanks Ramesh, System Restore did the trick.

Here are the two icons that everything was replaced for (I just didn't know
how best to describe them):
