What extension is the attachment or what is the attachment. No crystal ball here to
know what you are trying to describe

lol...well i guess your right. it's a word document saved in Word 97-2003
DOC. I always send these (2-4 a day, never had a problem) and for some reason
two days ago, my father in law cannot open them, no idea whats going on

krissy,
I am having the same problem sorta.
I can't open a pdf attached file being sent to me.
What did work is if I save the attachment to my desktop first and then open
it from there.
For some strange reason windows mail will not open the attachment for me.
Have your father in law try that for now.
good luck.

BTW, this just started happening to me a couple of days ago as well.
I can't open attachments unless I save to my desktop first.
I get an error message that the file cannot be found.
I also installed IE8 a couple days ago.
I don't know if that is a coincidence or not.
The same attachments open fine on my iPhone.
Have you or your FIL recently installed IE8?

Well after reading further down the line here, I see that IE8 is indeed the
problem.
I uninstalled it and now everything is back to normal. Attachments open
just fine.
Even my Desktop side Gadgets that started acting up after installing IE8 are
back to normal.
GOOD LORD...don't they beta test these things before subjecting us all to
its flaws???
SHEESH!

The receiver should go in Windows Mail to options, security and uncheck
"disable save or open attachments that possibly contain a virus". I suppose
that te installation of IE8 has checked that (again).

That is one of the first things I looked at after my problem started and it
was not checked.
I even tried to trigger it by checking the box, hitting apply, and then
closing and reopening IE and then unchecking it again.
No go.

No, it's not co-incidence in your side.

It's a bug that appears on some (many) systems after the install of IE8.
The only known fix is to uninstall IE8.
