Some Webpages Hang with DSL but not Dial-Up?

B

Buck

I'm hoping someone in this group might have some insight on this
problem.

I have a Dell Dimension 8250 2.4 ghz computer, 512 mb of ram with
Windows XP with Internet Explorer 7. I still have dial-up, but also got
DSL about 10 days ago. Dial-up works fine and all webpages will load,
but it's just slow. DSL works great on some sites but the pages hang or
fail to load completely on other sites or pages. (youtube, for
example.)

I've tried IE 6 and Netscape.

I've tried doing virus scans and looking for spyware, etc.

I've run Windows Defender.

I've run Windows Update.

I tried setting up my connection again.

I've turned my McAfee virus scan and firewall off (temporarily.) I've
tried turning Windows firewall off and on and have left it off.

I tried connecting my Zhone modem via ethernet and USB. Pages still
hang.

When my provider tests the speed, it checks out fine. I can't figure it
out, and neither can my provider.

Any ideas?

Open a command prompt window and enter the following (without the quotes)
after the prompt.
"ping www.google.com"

If this does not time out then ping the web page or pages you are having
problems with.
What type of message do you get?

It's possible that one of your settings is not optimal for DSL.
Try going to:
<http://www.dslreports.com/tools>
and run some of the tests there.
It might be worth a try to set your MTU a bit lower using the Dr TCP
program at this site.

Can you get hold of another NIC and swap it out to test it and verify if it's a bad
NIC or not?
Have you tried disabling the dial-up modem for verification as to a conflict or not?
If you have along with all else you've tried and it's still hanging, get your ISP's
service back out to change the modem and/or lines. Tell them you want a prorated
bill for the time your down and if it doesn't get resolved you'll drop them.
Hopefully they're not the only one in your area. I don't care how many times they
check the line speed and report to you what you can't see, the connection is fine.
When AT&T offered cable here and a problem arose, there standard manure was to reset
the modem and reset the IP because they show on their end the cable was fine, that I
did not put up with for very long.

Thanks for the suggestions. No luck yet.

JS,

I had already tried pinging youtube.com on the suggestion of the techs
and it looked fine.

Brian, would the NIC be where the Ethernet cable plugs into? If so,
shouldn't my connection have worked when I connected via USB? My ISP
was out here to check things and couldn't find anything amiss. They
tried an identical modem with my computer with the same results. I
tried disabling the dial-up modem.

John, Below is what came back at dslreports. It looks OK to me,
although I'm not sure I know what I'm looking at.

What I keep coming back to is the problem is only SOME sites and only
with DSL that there's a problem. On sites that work, I can download big
files very rapidly.

I need a memory check on that, IIRC you need a special USB cable to use with
DSL/ADSL.

Everything looks in order there and I'm not sure any tweaking will get you much
more speed. However I don't know what your ISP delivers so I can't really say.

Your download speed is approx one third of a MB a second.
Your upload speed which is always much slower is approx 1.5 KB a second.

FWIW, it looks like IE7 might have some issues with their tests. The java
applets won't run and the referred test says it's not the most current
version, but going directly to Java.com and using their Verify says it is
the latest verstion. 1.5.10 or something like that.

After wasting who knows how many hours, I found the problem. A tech
at
my ISP suggested uninstalling McAfee to check that angle. I thought
it
was likely a waste of time, like everything else I'd tried,
especially
since I'd already tried disabling both the Virus Scan and the
Firewall
features.

I was delighted to find that once I'd uninstalled McAfee (replacing
it
with a free version of AVG, and turning on Window Firewall) things
worked great.

This isn't the first time that I've found that virus protection
software was the source of a problem!

Thanks to those who took the time to make suggestions.
