Some recpients can't open my Word docs

I have a client who creates docs from a stationary template (which has their
logo in it). Some of their recipients can't open the document, others have no
problem. Is there any rhyme or reason to this?

What version of Word is the client using? What format are the documents
being saved as? What version(s) of Word are the recipients using?

When trying to open and it fails... what happens? Is there an error message?
Does the computer explode? Is the document opening, but the logo isn't
visible?
